Job Summary

People love food. They love consuming it and love consuming columns, photos and videos about it. As the vibrant food scene in northern Indiana continues to grow and emerge, the editor for Flavor 574 is responsible for the content and quality of an online magazine focused on regional food culture. This part of the Midwest has an eclectic mix of chefs and home cooks, brewpubs and amateur winemakers. Flavor 574 tells all their stories.
The editor of Flavor 574, based in Elkhart, Ind., ensures that stories are engaging and informative, working with newsroom staff, freelancers and designers to plan and produce content that’s fresh, relevant and effective. It’s presented on a website and social media, as well as in The Elkhart Truth newspaper.

Responsibilities & Skills
  • generate ideas for news and features, commission articles from freelance and in-house writers;
  • manage all Flavor 574 social media accounts;
  • understand the niche brand’s audience and making sure the product serves them as well as possible;
  • oversee the content, art and design for website;
  • manage and coach interns, freelancers and staff journalists who may contribute to Flavor;
  • recruit community bloggers and other contributors.

Job Requirements
  • College level training in journalism or communications.
  • Strong writing skills, creativity, attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with best practices for online content and SEO.
  • Comfortable using content management systems, or have ability to pick up skills within a determined training period.
  • Ability to manage social media marketing for specific sites and/or content.

Prior experience editing and writing for a publication or content-driven website is required. Local knowledge or a willingness to quickly familiarize self with the community is preferred. Must demonstrate passion for building and engaging with audiences.
Organization Relationships
The Flavor 574 editor reports directly to and works as a teammate with Marshall King, food guy for Flavor 574 and community editor for The Elkhart Truth.

Digital producer

The Elkhart Truth, an award-winning daily newspaper with a digital first philosophy in all aspects of our operation, is seeking a journalist with strong social media, SEO, reporting and editing skills to fill a key role on our newsroom’s digital desk.

The ideal candidate for this critical position will be able to quickly develop online content that will resonate with our readers, and then use proven SEO and social media techniques to promote those stories to the widest audience possible. The job also involves initiating and managing conversations with readers on social media, and working with other staff members to develop ways to best utilize online and social media resources for reporting, crowdsourcing and story ideas. Reporting and writing breaking news stories is a key component of this job, so previous crime reporting experience is a plus.

You’ll work hard, but you’ll be in a newsroom full of journalists who are passionate about what they do, are always looking for new journalistic tools and share that knowledge with the rest of the team.

Specific duties include:

●     Covering breaking news primarily for an online audience

●     Working with editors and other reporters to write and post breaking news stories and updates online

The challenge in the radio business is creativity, organization and innovation. Planet Radio’s internships are designed to be flexible, and will vary with season and with the level of station activity.
